~ sunday snippets ~

It's been a big week in our house.

We came back from 3 lovely, lazy weeks at the shack where it was mostly sunny to a dismal, grey week with so much rain that the washing is still piled up around us.  And the garden is a swamp (at least the roses are pretty).

We ran round getting Lily ready for her first day at high school - a half day Friday just for the new grade 7s.  Big smiles and lots of chat after a great orientation day had us all breathing big sighs of relief (and her school shoes - first pair in 4 years after wearing sandshoes every day -  haven't given her blisters!).

We sorted out all the Lego and had a bet on how many mini-figures we had.  The final count was 107 - but I suspect there are still some hidden away in secret drawers.

I've started cleaning out the office space and trying to organise my snail mail - this is some from the IG snail mail group I'm in - so much love tied up in those pretty ribbons.

One of the reading piles in my bedroom - I loved how colour themed it was (by accident) - am currently re-reading lots of Kate Atkinson's books - I love them.  The fault in our stars made me cry  - again!

We couldn't resist this huge box of chalks from the supermarket - and between the showers they've had quite a work out.

Pierre de Ronsard roses in their 2nd flush of the season rescued from the rain and sitting on the (momentarily clean) kitchen table.

How has your week been?  Any highlights?  Much rain?  I'm hoping for a bit more summer this week.

~ around here this week ~

1.  wisteria at the botanical gardens - that colour!

2.  Grace demonstrating a very unorthodox tackling style in backyard footy games

3.  Nutmeg - getting so fat she can barely jump - someone else must be feeding her cos she's on starvation rations here

4.  I made slightly chewy but totally yummy anzacs

5.  afternoon light in our kitchen

6.  banksia rose sprawling all over one of the fences in the neighbourhood  - I'm hoping to squeeze some more walks after dinner in now the light and weather are better

7.  my photo - Monica McInerney's new bestselling novel - so exciting!!!  I almost fell over when I saw this in Big W.

We were straight back into school routines this week - lots of gymnastics, swimming lessons, skipping and the swimming carnival.  I am also consulting twice a week and this week had some immunising and a uni tute as well.  A very quiet weekend was definitely in order.

How was your week?

~ snippets from our week ~

1.  Our tomato plants are finally producing some tomatoes  - very late and in very scant quantities  - but there is nothing nicer than eating your own tomatoes on toast with lots of salt and pepper.

2.  Supermarket herbs in cute pots in our kitchen - the coriander has quickly bolted to seed but the basil is holding up quite well.

3.  She has taken slightly longer than her sister did to find her reading mojo but to find her like this and hear her declare that she loves reading just fills my heart with joy.

4.  Artist in residence hard at work

5.  A calm corner of our room in the afternoon light.

6.  Nutmeg stealing a cuddle on the bed.

7.  Some gorgeous origrami cards of our beautiful nephew have made it onto the fridge this week - can't wait to see him again in 2 weeks.

8.  Hinsby beach this afternoon - I gazed at clouds while they explored the rocks and (gasp!) swam - is that the last swim of the summer?

~ snippets as autumn arrives ~

Summer is fading away,  the light is softening, the leaves are starting to change.
We grab jumpers as we leave the house.
Some tomatoes are finally ripening.
Autumn arrives.

1.  Lily holding a bunch of summer in her hands

2.  Cobwebby loveliness

3.  The Japanese gardens at the Botanical Gardens yesterday - we wandered the gardens for a few hours yesterday with some friends - its always so very calming and beautiful.  Autumn certainly looks as though its arrived in this pic.

4.  Maples - I could photograph them endlessly.

5.  Windflowers in my garden

6.  The tessellated pavements at Eaglehawk neck - we had a day trip down to Port Arthur today - our first visit in 6 years.  I love being a tourist in our own state.

7.  The separate prison at Port Arthur where they kept the worst of the prisoners in isolation.  They're painted now, clean, sparse, room to think...I was craving some isolation time as I walked around!

8.  Rainbow carrots - how cool do they look? - the kids don't like them though - do yours?

9.  He makes me laugh every day at how he pulls his socks so tight, so high.  He won't wear the 9-12 size any more because his shoes are a size 13 and so he insists on the 13-3 and they are so big and he hates wrinkles in his socks - and so this.

10.  We made Donna Hay's baked lemon cheesecake.  It was good.  Very good.

~ snippets of our week ~

1.  Faffing with flowers and lovely afternoon light.  I was asked the definition of faffing on IG - I think its just doing all the fun little things that grab my attention and that I enjoy instead of my real jobs!

2.  We had a visitor inside today - I've never been so close to one before.

3.  A message from my eldest on our fridge that desperately needs a clean

4.  Outgoing snail mail

5.  Little prints of some of my favourite instagram shots - printed by social print studio - I'd love to send some out

6.  Golden lemons and golden words for the newest little reader in the house

7.  Foraged pink gum in my bedroom - its going to make the most hideous mess but its so pretty.

I'm slowly settling into a new 2014 routine.  I tried a pump/power class at the gym last Monday  - big mistake - I could hardly move all week.  I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to go back tomorrow or not.

I do hope your week is lovely.
There are more lovely stills and snippets here.

~ stills - approaching the end of holidays ~

1 and 2.  Boat sheds on the way to Coningham.  Around this corner is a beautiful, family friendly beach - I hadn't visited for years.  Its a gorgeous little beach - and very family friendly - we'll take the kayak down next time.

3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.  Great day trip to the Apple Shed down near Grove.  We feasted on local cheeses, bread, cured meats and fabulous cherries but forgot to sample the cider - next time!!  Love what they've done there  - lots of fascinating historical items and details - but sadly missed meeting Michelle.  That's 2 good reasons to go back again soon.

9.  Fresh greengages from my mum, postcrossing postcards, poppies and vintage sheet tablecloth making my kitchen happy.

10.  We went to see Australia play England at T20 cricket on Wednesday night.  Fantastic atmosphere and a hilarious conversation on IG about our early cricket crushes (mine was Viv Richards).  We sat here at Bellerive Quay to eat our dinner before the game.  It was a gorgeous evening.

We've got 2 more days of holidays and then the school year with all its structure and routine starts again.  I'm still not ready.
