~ grateful for ... us ~
Its chilly outside, rain is falling, I'm thinking about lighting the fire for later (already).
6 years ago today where we were was warm and sunny, bright and breezy.
It was our wedding day.
We'd been together for 10 years and had 2 beautiful children.
Life was great (sleep deprived but great).
We eloped, took our little family to a beach far away and got married.
Didn't tell anyone. (ANYONE. That did not go down well)
I'd never been one for fantasies of white weddings, meringue gowns, having the "big day"
I felt I already had it all.
From the very beginning all I'd felt was certainty.
The rightness of us.
What we ran to was a marriage not a wedding*.
Life's changed.
We're a family of 5 now, we've renovated our house, we have different jobs, new friends, a new set of priorities.
That promise to share a life, to hope for the best, to be there for each other just keeps expanding.
We're still so right.
And I'm so very grateful for that.
♥
*{Bron wrote a beautiful piece about this topic that spoke to me from the first time I read it - like she'd examined my half formed thoughts and made sense of them}

PS I was very intrigued by your comment about gratitude, Ally. I think you raised something really important. Like most people in our society, I struggle to be grateful for all that I have/do/am and often wrestle with doubt, pessimism, fear and a sense that I am not enough. That's actually why I like the weekly gratitude practice so much: it forces me to keep my eyes open all week so I have something to blog about on Saturdays! Also, it's called practice, so all I need to to is show up... it doesn't need to be perfect. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your struggle. I can really relate and would honestly want to say that the gratitude practice is often not enough to "snap me out" of a bad patch... but just the act of doing it every week seems to make a difference. Even if it's a small moment of sitting quietly and allowing everything that I do/have/am just to be enough, just for that moment. xxx
That image is stunning! Love your words Ally. Happy wedding anniversary! Ours is today - six years ago too! xx
ReplyDeletehope you had a lovely anniversary

ReplyDeleteHi again Ally,
ReplyDeleteYup! I hear you. The little things can slip by so quickly that it can be hard to take a moment's pause to notice, let alone record them.
And the celebrating vs bragging debate, ach! Don't get me started!! :-)
Thanks again for a lovely and interesting little exchange on this. It's important, no?

Happy wedding Anniversary! How brave of you to elope and not tell anyone? In the months leading up to my wedding I wished I did that myself.
ReplyDeleteHappy wedding anniversary it looks like you had a great wedding. I think eloping would be so much easier!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful post with beautiful words. Happy anniversary x
